A World Heritage in Emergency Needs Your Help and Support

The floods of 2017 which caused major structural damage in the old town, the ”downright outrageous destruction of older building files<\/strong>” in the city administration discovered by the Lower Saxony Heritage Association in 2024, the ordered destruction of significant parts of the Ratsgymnasium’s house archive, years of tolerating the ongoing decay of vacant important architectural monuments, obvious structural engineering mistakes in building construction and civil engineering, such as in front of and in the town hall, as well as inadequate documentation of the condition of the old town, give rise to the suspicion that many of those responsible are not fulfilling their duty to preserve the old town.

Das Hochwasser von 2017 mit den gro\u00dfen Substanzsch\u00e4den in der Altstadt, die vom Nieders\u00e4chsischen Heimatbund 2024 ver\u00f6ffentlichte \u2018\u2018geradezu ungeheuerliche Vernichtung von \u00e4lteren Bauaktenteilen<\/strong>\u2018\u2018 in der Stadtverwaltung, die angeordnete Vernichtung bedeutender Teile des Hausarchivs des Ratsgymnasiums, die jahrelange Duldung des anhaltenden Verfalls leerstehender bedeutender Baudenkmale, offensichtliche bautechnische Fehlentwicklungen im Hoch- und Tiefbau wie zum Beispiel vor und im Rathaus, sowie eine ungen\u00fcgende Dokumentation des Zustandes der Altstadt lassen den Verdacht zu, dass viele Verantwortliche ihrer Pflicht zum Erhalt der Altstadt nicht nachkommen.<\/em><\/span>

Urban development problems such as the inadequate structural flood protection for the old town, the permanent understaffing of the Lower Monument Protection Authority, and the lack of supervision in the preservation of existing buildings in both the public and private sectors, have reached a dimension that threatens parts of the city\u2019s substance.

St\u00e4dtebauliche Probleme wie der nicht ausreichende baulichen Hochwasserschutz f\u00fcr die Altstadt, die dauerhafte fachliche Unterbesetzung der Unteren Denkmalschutzbeh\u00f6rde und mangelnde Aufsicht bei der Bestandssicherung sowohl im \u00f6ffentlichen als auch im privaten Bereich haben eine zum Teil substanzbedrohende Dimension erreicht.<\/span><\/em>

All this leads to the conclusion that the town of Goslar can no longer preserve its historical heritage on its own.
